LightCalc

Cut the guesswork, light with confidence.

Our vision? 🚀

Our goal is to empower filmmakers around the world to become more confident in their lighting setups before getting to set. That’s why I created LightCalc – a tool to help cinematographers & gaffers calculate the required illuminance needed for a specific scene.

What is LightCalc?

LightCalc is designed to help users (cinematographers and gaffers) evaluate the required illuminance based on:

  • Ambient scenarios
  • Camera settings
  • Subject reflectance

It takes things further by helping users decide which lighting fixture will provide enough output—factoring in diffusion materials and the distance between the light and the subject.

Whether you’re planning a simple setup or managing a complex scene, LightCalc removes the guesswork and delivers precise calculations in just minutes.

Why use LightCalc?

LightCalc’s unique selling proposition lies in its ability to save time and enhance precision:

  • Calculate the required illuminance needed for your scene.
  • Instantly determine if a specific light is powerful enough.
  • Easily test how far a light can be placed from the subject without sacrificing output.

The tool is versatile—powerful enough for seasoned professionals to optimize their workflow, yet simple enough for beginners to understand the fundamentals of lighting.

I’ve been fortunate to receive fantastic feedback from industry gaffers and DPs who’ve tried LightCalc. They’ve praised its practicality and precision, and I’m committed to continually improving the tool based on user input.
